It is not often that the FDA steps in to the cosmetic world but they have actually issued a warning about the classic glycolic face peels which use AHAs and which are so popular to-day.
First, what are the AHAs?
They are alpha hydroxyl acids and they come from a variety of sources such as citrus fruit acids, glycolic acid, lactic and malic acids. So, basically fruit and milk derivatives.
What do AHAs do ?
They actually strip away the top layer of skin and get rid of impurities, scars, spots and even very fine lines. It all sounds great but……
What happens next?
The second layer of the skin(the dermis) is exposed and starts to manufacture collagen to get over the trauma of the stripping. The only problem is that while this is happening, the skin is exposed to all sorts for toxins and it could be very damaging to your overall health.
The FDA Warning
The FDA has received over 100 complaints about adverse dermatological reactions which included burning, rashes and swelling. There could also be pigmentary changes such as spots and blisters. But the FDA’s biggest worry is the possibility of damage from the sun after the skin is treated with AHAs.
That is why they are recommending that a warning about exposure to the sun should be on all the face creams and treatments using AHAs. There is a risk of skin cancer so it is imperative to wear protective clothing and avoid sun exposure for at least a week after the treatment with AHAs. There should be a sunburn alert on all the products using AHAs.
Many people using glycolic face peels do so repeatedly and the long term photocarcinogenic effects are basically unknown.
The Cancer Prevention Coalition warning is even more alarming in that it points out that a glycolic face peel which contains alpha hydroxyl acids are now regarded as being one of the most dangerous cosmetic products on the market today!
How can I stay safe and well?
Why expose your skin to this awful stripping away of skin cells just to get a fresher look? You can still get smoother and more radiant skin by using a safe hydrating and cleansing mask. These contain kaolin and bentone gel and are regarded as totally safe. They are simply lifting off the grime and the dirt but leave the skin cells intact.
Afterwards, you can use moisturizers which contain Rigin, Xtend TK and shea butter which can all help to get your collagen regenerating safely and comfortably.
Forget about the glycolic face peel and get even better results without any of the pain and discomfort. This is the best way I know to stay safe and well!
